In this haunting and hopeful debut novel, a teen’s court-mandated psychiatric residency prompts a change in perspective from which there is no looking back.

Taylor Truwell is a sixteen-year-old girl from Florida with a troubled past, a neglectful mother, a seemingly callous father, and an urge to flee. When Taylor is caught with a stolen car, her reaction lands her in court for resisting arrest. Her father convinces the judge of an alternative to punishment: treatment in a juvenile psychiatric correctional facility. And so Taylor arrives at Sunny Meadows.Sunny Meadows is anything but the easy way out, and Taylor has to fight hard just to hold on to her sanity as she battles her parents, an intrusive therapist, and a group of particularly nasty fellow patients. But even as Taylor clings to her stubborn former self, she gradually relents to new friendships—and to unexpected romance. Sunny Meadows goes against everything Taylor stands for. But could it be the place that saves her?

In this striking debut, Laura Lascarso weaves together a powerful story of anger and self-destruction, hope and love, and the complicated way that it all comes together.

Review:

I received a free copy of this book for review . Thank you , Laura !

I had high expectations from this book and I was not disappointed . This book was a life lesson from which everyone should learn . The main character, Taylor, stand between an alcoholic mother who spend all her nights away from home and an severe father , who left her mother years ago. Caught in the middle of their disputes Taylor make a wrong choice to run away from home and steal a car. Police catches it and decide to send it to a youth correction center . And that`s how Taylor arrive to Sunny Meadows a place with strict rules and guards patrolling everywhere. Taylor is convinced that everything is against her and decides to get out by herself from institution.

But she can`t do this without help. Here , at Sunny Meadows , Taylor become friend with Margo , a
child star who defies the rules, a funny character and very inspiring , Victor , Margo`s boyfriend , supplies all the  people in the ceneter with items of suspicious origin , Charlotte , a ponny-lover and probably the last unicorn and A.J. , a mysterious who don`t talk to anybody . But both , is bothered by a group of patients named Latino Queens who treat everybody like they`re better than rest.  Taylor ‘s first thought is to get away from there as quickly and uses her friends to help her to get out (which bothered me a little … ). But besides being attacked by Brandi , leader of the Latina Queens group, it has to deal with her therapist and find out who the mysterious boy who meets in a dark room . Her life seems totally messed up when he realizes that it may remain in the center until it turns eighteen.

I know Taylor’s way to exit seemed completely wrong at first, but I couldn`t  notice the decision to start a new life away , which made it a stronger character in my heart. After her escape plan got ruined – thanks AJ’s betrayal – she finally realizes the importance of treatment to recover . In the second part we discover a new Taylor , one who cooperates to do well, one who uses her creative energyto do good. I found it amazing how the author formed a new Taylor without eliminated the old one  so we can see the action of the story from two different part , sometimes one who desperately wants to get out and sometimes one would like to stay. In the end , Taylor forgive A.J. and they become more than friends and both creates a real garden behind the center. And Taylor ‘s choice to stay with her father and no longer let her mother followed her life , in the last chapter , made me love this book and make me want to reread this book soon .

As I said in the beginning, is a beautiful story of life, one that anyone can learn , one that is worth reading . My blog ` Devoratorul de carti ` and I , personally , recommend this book because it is a book for everyone and a book you can not put down , with characters shaped and beautiful story . I promise you will not regret if you buy it  and I have to thank again to the author for gave me the opportunity to promote this powerful story in Romania . Thank you , Laura , it was wonderful !
